Trade Union Learning Link in Norfolk

 

What is Trade Union Learning Link (TULL) doing in Norfolk?
TULL Norfolk has been working in the county for the last five years, focusing on the development of workplace learning involving trade unions. TULL aims to build links between unions and employers, support the development of networks of unions and learning providers, arrange and enable networking opportunities for union learning reps (ULRs), learning project workers and others. TULL has been supporting a range of new initiatives in workplace learning involving trade unions. It has been involved in developing innovative approaches to learning, helped with accessing funding sources and arranged training and briefing sessions on relevant issues for ULRs and project workers. We are also helping unions to recruit ULRs.

Induction and resource pack for Union Learning Representatives (ULRs)
TULL has compiled a pack of useful resources and information for new ULRs who sign up to the project. After discussion with project workers and others at the first TULL Steering group for the new project, a pack has been put together. It includes practical resources, to assist ULRs in their role. It includes a ruler/calculator, stationery, pen, an IAG info directory, TULL newsletters and other information. Available to new, registered ULRs, through TULL.

Development fund/account
This is a totally new aspect of TULL and is a way that this LSC funded project enables us to respond in an individual and practical way to hiccups, barriers and frustrations associated with developing learning projects and learners. So often we hear project workers and ULRs say that if only they had a small amount of support & funding for a post level 2 course, books to help learners, etc. they could make more progress and headway. Often this level of resourcing is just not available. This TULL project enables ULRS to access a development account to support each new learner in some practical way.

Once completed forms have been processed your union's Norfolk Learning Project Development Account will be credited with the appropriate amount of funding support, (£300 per ULR, £20 per new learner). Arrangements for allocating the fund will be agreed between you and your learning project co-ordinator.

ULR support
We have also recognised that ULRs need support in their new role and the development fund recognises this need too, with a larger resource budget available to newly recruited union learning reps. This, together with the induction pack, the training course (provided by your union or the TUC), the network meetings, short training sessions, etc. all aim to help ULRs to feel less isolated and more supported in their role.

Why become a Union Learning Representative (ULR)?
The ULR role now has legal status. The ULR's role is to let work colleagues know about opportunities that are available for them to take up courses and learn new skills. You can find out what interests those you work with and can then link with local colleges and other learning providers to set up courses at times and in places that suit the needs of the learners. You are entitled to reasonable time off to carry out this very important new role. Also training .and support are available.

Steering Group
The Steering Group for the project will meet as appropriate during the year.

Further training for ULRs
TULL are able to arrange short courses and briefings over the life of the project to keep ULRs and Project Co-ordinators up to date with what is new and relevant in the field, specifically focusing on local issues, working with local unions and learning providers and initiatives, and responding to needs identified by you, filling in any gaps. Please let us know if there are any particular areas of training or issues you want us to address and we will try to set up an appropriate briefing session/meeting.

What else is going on?
We can work with you to arrange learning days and events based at workplaces, look at setting up small learning points in companies, or support ULRs and learning projects in other ways.
